Dream Job
Since 1969, Mark Harris has worked for a well-known toy manufacturer designing cars. When he started, he was the only man in the department, but now he is in charge of a team of 35 designers.
Mark first got interested in cars during his teens. His dad was a football coach and one day he took a car magazine away from one of his players during a practice session. He brought it home and gave it to Mark. From that moment on, cars became the love of Mark's life. He went on to study car design at university and then worked for a car company designing actual cars, before being persuaded by a friend to join the toy company and set up their design department.
Of all the cars he has designed, his favorite is the Silver Sunrise. It may not have achieved such high sales as some other cars, but it is important to Mark because it was the first time he was allowed to make a model that looked like a real car. "Before that, the wheels on all the cars stuck out so they would go straight," explained Mark. "The Silver Sunrise was the first one where the wheels were under the body. It meant it didn't work so well on a race track but it looked amazing."
Now in his 60s, Mark is approaching retirement. He finds it hard to imagine what that will be like. "I have expensive hobbies, so it might be difficult to continue with them when I am no longer earning! Plus, I like coming in to work. Ideally, I'd like to retire part-time and work part-time."

Creating a youth club
Last summer, our town achieved something quite special. We created a youth club in the town center. Before that, there was absolutely nothing for young people to do after school and at the weekends. It took a long time to finally open the youth club. First of all, we had to find a building that we could use. We put up posters all over the town asking people to help us find a place. We were very lucky because after a couple of weeks someone said we could have an old shop that had been closed for a year. Best of all, he said, we did not have to pay anything to use it. The only thing we had to promise to do was to keep it in good condition.
Once we had a building, lots of people came to help us paint the rather dirty rooms and put furniture in it. Then, a big business in the town gave us three computers and a large TV. The local football team gave us some sport and fitness equipment and they send a coach twice a week to do health and fitness classes with us. There we can buy drinks and snacks. My mother often bakes cakes for the cafe. We also do lots of art at the youth club. We put our pictures on the walls to make the place look really interesting and colorful.
I think the most important thing about our youth club though is that it is a place that young people can go to if they are feeling lonely and want someone to talk to. Also, there is a homework room where we can sit quietly and study. This is useful to me because I have to share a room with my little sister at home. Obviously that makes it hard for me to concentrate on my school work.
Creating the youth club, in my opinion, is the best thing that has happened in our town recently.

Subject: Piano lessons
Hi Oliver,
Guess what? I've finally started piano lessons, like you! As you know, it's something I've wanted to do ever I was young. Anyway, a couple of months ago I saw someone playing the piano on TV - he was brilliant. And when I found out he'd only started playing quite recently, that encouraged to start lessons.
I've got a really good teacher, and I go to her house twice a week lessons. She's very patient. Every time I make a mistake, she explains what I did wrong. Also, I couldn't read music when I started. It's been hard to learn to read the notes on the page and decide which piano keys to use at the time! But when I finally play something that other people recognize, it really makes me happy. Maybe day, I'll become even better you are at playing the piano!
