My new hobbies - gardening
by Beth Collins
A garden is much more than just creating a beautiful environment. It can be a way to save or even make money and, more than that, it can be a place where you can express yourself. For me, it's a bit of all these things. I know it may sound strange for a 13-year-old to be interested in gardening but I always have been and I would love to make a career out of it.
I have learned many things these past few years I have been reading about and doing some gardening. So, here is my top advice about gardening. First, you do not need to spend a lot of money to have a beautiful garden. Some of the gardens I think are the prettiest are just lines of plants. There aren't many garden decorations and pathways. It's just beautiful plants loaded with fruits and vegetables. We can also find many useful things for free, from pieces of old wood to old pots and pans. Or, we can build things for free from materials that other people have thrown away.
If you just remember that planting way more than you need will take the stress away of losing some plants, you will save yourself a lot of worry, too. You need to ask yourself, which plants produce enough food to make them worth growing. I actually sat down and did the maths on that one this spring. It amazed me what some plants were worth. A tomato, for example, can produce £50-£150 worth of fruit. It takes up a lot of space but that's a lot of money coming out of a 50p seed! So if I had known sooner what each plant could save us, I would have told my parents to fill our garden with different plants.
And finally, gardening doesn't have to be all or nothing. But then I guess that's more of a personality weakness than anything. I struggle with doing things a little at a time. Once I decide to do something, I usually devote every waking hour to it for a little while and then get tired. So it's okay to just have one tomato plant, and it's okay to have an off-year. It will save you a lot of stress.

THE HISTORY OF FOOTBALL AS AN OLYMPIC SPORT
Football was one of the first team games to become an Olympic sport. The first football games were at the Paris Olympics in 1900, but it wasn't a very big competition, with only three teams taking part: France, Great Britain, and Belgium.
However, in the 1908 London Olympic Games, the Football Association of England organized a proper competition with new rules. Six national teams took part this time.
The first South American team, Uruguay, took part in the Paris Games in 1924 and easily won the event. The Uruguayan side, which included the first Olympic black footballer, José Leandro Andrade, defeated Switzerland 3 - 0 in the final. Four years later, Uruguay won their second gold by defeating Argentina in the final. It was becoming very clear that South American teams were among the best in the world.
For many years, only amateur athletes were allowed to participate in the Olympic Games. But at the Berlin games in 1936, this changed and countries were able to include their top athletes in all their teams.
There was a new rule which said that the majority of players had to be under the age of 23. Only three players over this age could play in each team. The idea was that it would give African and Asian teams a chance against the big footballing nations in Europe and South America. This helped to make it possible for countries like Nigeria and Cameroon to win gold medals in 1996 and 2000.
Women's football, however, didn't become an Olympic sport until 1996. In 1920, an all-female match had attracted a huge crowd of 53,000 people in Liverpool. In the 21st century, women's football is becoming very popular again, and there are more opportunities for girls to learn to play.

Today I'm wearing black jeans, a white cashmere sweater, and trainers. I've had this pair of jeans for years - they're ancient. The cut is quite loose, a bit baggy. They're easy wear.
I like plain, good quality clothes that last for ages. I'm not keen patterns - well, maybe a striped tie or shirt, they can look quite smart. I don't follow latest fashion or enjoy dressing up. I'm much happier in jeans. I've got a beautiful lightweight woolen suit I hardly ever wear it. I like a classic, fairly relaxed look. I wear mainly black, white, cream and camel, sometimes a little bit of red or blue, nothing too bright.
As a chef, I spend a lot of time on my feet, so I have to look after well. I always buy the expensive shoes I can afford. Shoes are definitely my biggest luxury.
