SAND SCULPTURES
My name's Ariana and I live on the coast of Portugal where there are lots of beautiful sandy beaches and warm sunny days. It's the perfect location for my favorite hobby - making sand sculptures. It's always great fun and it costs nothing. For fairly basic sculptures like the ones I make, all you really need is a safe place to build it, something to dig with, and a large bucket. I'd never actually thought of making sand sculptures before until my friends and I discovered some fantastic ones that were along the shore near where I live. I couldn't believe that such beautiful model buildings, incredible creatures, and some amazingly realistic faces of famous people were all mode out of the sand. From that moment, I knew that this was something I just had to do, even though I'd never considered myself to be an artist or very creative.
In fact, anyone can create a sand sculpture, but it's much harder than it looks, as I soon discovered. The first sand sculpture I ever made was of a sudden the head started to break off! I tried everything to try and fix it, but it was hopeless. Soon the whole thing was a big pile of wet sand on the beach. Some people sunbathing nearby seemed to think this was extremely funny, but that just made me want to keep trying even more. I wished I'd listened to an expert on YouTube who recommends digging up wet sand and to use it to build the sand sculptures because it sticks together better. So, I did that for my next sculpture of a camel. And I managed to complete it in four hours though they don't always take me that long to make.
I've heard people say that sandcastle is for kids, not adults, but that doesn't bother me at all. Many people don't understand that even lightly touching a sand sculpture can make a whole section all off, which can take ages to rebuild and I get upset when that sometimes happens. Of course, heavy rain can do some damage, but not as much as you might think. As long as you build for enough up the beach, the waves won't wash a sand sculpture away either. So, when you're next at the seaside, make one yourself - you'll get a great sense of achievement!
Why did Ariana decide to start making sand sculptures?

A Helping Hand
Lee Newton was sitting on a station platform under an old blanket when he saw a young couple talking. It was a freezing night in January, and the couple were clearly cold. Lee called to them and asked them if they wanted to share his blanket. The three of them started chatting, and Lee learned that their names were Karen and Mark.
Lee told them that he'd lost his job and then his flat when he could no longer pay the rent. He had no family to help him, and nowhere to go. Karen and Mark felt terrible. They couldn't imagine sleeping on the icy platform for even one night. As they spent their night in the station chatting to Lee, they realized that anyone could end up in his situation.
When morning came, Karen and Mark bought an extra train ticket and invited Lee to come home with them. Lee accepted and gratefully moved into Karen and Mark's spare bedroom. Once he had an address, Lee was able to apply for jobs. He saved up to buy a small motorbike, then got an evening job delivering pizzas. After a few months, Lee had saved up enough money to rent a small flat of his own.
"When times get tough, you need friends and family," Lee says. "Karen and Mark became that for me." An act of kindness was all Lee needed to help him get his life back.

Drawing
Drawing is one of the earliest forms of communication and goes back much than the written word. However, despite its long history, it has not always been of as a form of art.
When paper became easily in the 14th century, the use of drawing in the arts increased. Some of the great artists of the Renaissance produced drawings of the highest and presented the human body in a more realistic way than ever before. However, it was often practiced order to plan a larger painting and wasn't taken very seriously as a form of art.
Today, drawing is regarded as a skill and no less important than oil painting or other creative works.

LIVING IN ANTARCTICA
I've always wanted to go to Antarctica because my dad spent several months every year working there as a scientist before I was born. He said it was the quietest and most beautiful place he ever been to. So when I got a job at one of the research stations, I was really excited. All my friends thought I was mad and tried to persuade me to go. They couldn't understand why I wanted to live that was so cold and far home. But I love it. In the summer, we spend our weekends kayaking, fishing, and climbing volcanoes. In the winter, it can be boring it's dark 24 hours a day. But it's more fun I expected because all the staff watch lots of movies and play games together. On 21 June, we celebrate mid-winter with a big party.
