Kirsty Wade, young athlete

I've always been keen on sport and very fit so a few years ago I decided to join my local athletics club. In the beginning, I put all my effort into the long jump because it was my best event, but the coach encouraged me to try different things.

I ended up as a middle-distance runner, which means I don't run the short distances like 100 meters, or long cross-country races, but the in-between ones like 800 meters. It's an interesting type of running because you have to mix speed with strength. You also have to think a lot about how you race and choose the right moment to run at your maximum speed. You need to do quite a lot of regular training when you first start and it helps if you have a good coach who can keep you motivated and teach you the basics.

I take part in some quite major competitions now, but I still remember my first race. I was so nervous before it started. And when it finished, I could still feel my hands shaking. It was a great race and I came second so I was very pleased. Since then I've learned to stay calm before and during races. I do a lot of breathing exercises that help me stay focused and relaxed. Competing has really helped me to trust in my own abilities. And now I find that I love running in front of a crowd - I suppose it's a sort of performance.

One thing I don't enjoy so much is how hard you have to work to stay fit and strong enough to race, although it helps that I often train with others. I try to eat and sleep well, but I don't have a special diet. Mostly it's a case of getting plenty of variety and eating more of everything because I'm so active.

I sometimes watch Olympic athletes on TV and imagine myself in their position. It must be a fantastic experience, but at the moment I don't feel that is necessarily where I'm aiming. I think you have to give up so much if you want to reach that level.

The Crime of the Century

When the Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre in Paris in 1911, it caused a sensation and left the art world and police puzzled as to how it had been taken and who had carried out the crime. It also helped make the work of art probably the most famous painting in the world.

At first, the police suspected artists who didn't like classical works of art of carrying out the crime. The poet Apollinaire was arrested and questioned for a few days.

However, the true thief was an Italian man named Vincenzo Peruggia. He had a criminal record and had found work in the Louvre for a time. On the day the crime took place, he entered the museum along with other museum employees wearing the same white smock. He then took the painting off the wall and left the building with the work of art wrapped in his white smock.

Peruggia kept the painting for two years in his Paris apartment before eventually contacting an Italian art dealer, offering to return the painting to Florence for a reward. He argued he was returning the painting to its rightful home.

He was finally arrested after passing the painting to the dealer. However, many Italians saw his actions as those of a national hero. The painting was indeed shown off around Italy before it was eventually returned to Paris and the Louvre.

However, after being stolen and finally returned, it became more well-known, its popularity grew and, as we know now, made the Mona Lisa smile famous around the world.

We all need a good night's sleep

According to research, 20 million people in the UK are not enough sleep nowadays. Experts believe that this may be one of the leading causes of health problems.

So all of us should try to work out how much sleep we need, says Professor Chris Idzikowski. To do so, we must our alarm clock for when we need to get up, then count back six to eight hours, on how much sleep we feel we need. Then, we should try to go to bed and get up at the same time every day, even at weekends. If we still feel tired during the day, we should try going to bed 15 minutes earlier for a week until we wake up refreshed. So if we go to bed at 11 p.m., we should go at 10.45 pm. If we are still tired, then we should go at 10.30 the following week, and so on, until we find the perfect for us.

Finally, we must remember that a weekend afternoon nap can help up for any missed hours in the week.

Speakers' Corner

That Speakers' Corner exists at all puzzle to foreigners. Speakers' Corner is a place in Hyde Park, London, anyone can say anything about anybody without getting arrested for it! Sounds unbelievable, doesn't it?

This strange tradition started in the UK in the middle of the 19th century. Many famous people have spoken at Speakers' Corner then, including Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin and the writer, George Orwell.

Often, Speakers' Corner attracts rather unusual people. Anyone can turn up and talk on any subject. Their audiences go to watch them more for entertainment because they are interested in they have to say.

Nowadays there are other Speakers' Corners over the UK and even in countries. They seem to be as popular as ever!
