What it means to be a Holiday Company Manager
by Mandy Jones

When I finished school, I did a business administration degree at Bristol University. After graduating, I worked for a credit card company for the next eight years. During all this time, I was an assistant marketing manager. Although I gained a lot of useful experience doing this job, last year I decided that I really needed a change. That's why I decided to move to Thomsen Holidays, where I have worked as a manager ever since. Here my main job is to think up new and interesting ideas for holidays.

When I have to work from my office in the UK, I arrive at 9 a.m. The first thing I do is answer my e-mails, and then l plan the rest of my day. My main role is to look for new projects for Thomsen Holidays in our Mediterranean resorts. So, I have to come up with ideas, develop them and evaluate their success.

We have lots of meetings in the office on a daily basis, which involve the marketing department, holiday representatives, and people that we bring in from outside, such as entertainment organizers. Our aim is to develop an exciting idea and turn it into a realistic and workable project.

Once a month I spend a few days overseas, checking possible resorts, meeting with reps to develop their roles, and working out how events could be sold to the customer. I often work with resort supervisors, use their local knowledge of bars and clubs for venues, talk through new ideas and find out how existing ones are working. I also get the chance to meet holidaymakers. When I do that though, I have to be very open-minded because the ideas can actually come from anywhere.

I must say that I love my job for many different reasons. But what I think I enjoy most is that I get to travel to all these amazing destinations while I'm actually being paid to do so. Not to mention that I work on projects that really excite me. I would never even consider changing jobs.

D. There was no way I could finish the race now.

My first marathon

The alarm went off at half-past four that morning. It was far too early to get up, and the idea of running 26 miles seemed impossible. I pulled myself out of bed, showered and pulled on my running gear.

By six o'clock, I was at the Dodger Stadium, where the rest of my running group was already waiting. When they saw the look of terror on my face, they laughed kindly. This was clearly my first marathon. When I realized that I was just one of them, I felt a little better. Helicopters hovered overhead ready to film us as we ran through the streets of Los Angeles, passing every major landmark until we reached the sea at Santa Monica. Suddenly, I felt very lucky and proud to be a part of it.

As I began to run, I tried to ignore the aches in my body from eight months of training. Instead, I put one foot in front of the other and kept going. By mile five, my body was complaining, and by mile eight, my muscles were screaming at me.

I was running alone now, but I was still running. By mile 12, I was ready to give up, and by mile 15, I was moving even more slowly. By mile 18, I was in my neighborhood. But by mile 22, there were only four miles to go. Spectators yelled encouragement at me as I ran past. 'You can do it! Keep going!'

As the finish line came into sight, I started running faster and faster, and I crossed that line running. I grinned as the medal was placed over my head, and then I cried. I had done it. I had run my first marathon!

Honey

People all over the world enjoy eating honey. But how much do you know about this food? Most honey is made by bees, but what few people realize is that there are several types of bee which make honey.

Bees may have to visit about two million flowers to produce only half a kilo of honey. The type of flower the bees visit both how the honey tastes and its color. In fact, there are more than three hundred kinds of honey.

In times, honey was added to food instead of sugar, as sugar was very rare. In many cultures, people have used it for centuries to various health problems. people all over the world still add it to hot water and drink it when they have a sore throat.

For each question, write the correct answer in the gap. Write ONE word or a number, a date, a time.

Stonehenge

Stonehenge was one my favorite places on our tour of England last year. It's near the city of Salisbury. It's a ring of huge standing stones about 4 meters high. Experts think it built in three stages between 3,000 and 1,500 years ago.

Building something like that must been really important at the time but nobody knows for sure why they did it. Archaeologists have found evidence of human bone from far back as 3,000 years ago so it's possible it was a place where people were buried. Some people think that it could be a kind of calendar because of the location of the stones when sun rises. People have even suggested it was a landing site for visitors from outer space! the reason was for building it, I loved visiting it!
