PEOPLE WITHOUT HOMES
When you go to sleep at night, like most people, you lay down in your comfortable bed. Did you know that there are millions of people worldwide who are not lucky enough to have a home? These people are called “the homeless”. People who are homeless do not have enough money to buy or rent a home, so they sleep under bridges, in parks, or in the streets. For many, the only bed they have is a cardboard box.
Nobody knows for sure just how many people are homeless in the world today. In 2005, there were about 100 million homeless people. Between 75-80% of the homeless are men, but there are also millions of children who live in the streets. In Brazil alone, there are hundreds of thousands of street children without homes. In Manila, the capital of the Philippines, and in Cairo, the capital of Egypt, thousands of people live in cemeteries among the dead.
Many organizations try to help the homeless. They give them food, shelter, and clothing. Many people volunteer or work for free, with these organizations. Most homeless people have no jobs. To help the homeless look for jobs, some people leave them newspapers, so they can read the want ads. If they can find a job, they might be able to make enough money to pay for a place to live. Some homeless people try to make money by asking for money. Others do not like to beg, so they look for empty soda cans and bottles to return to shops in exchange for money. When the homeless are hungry and don’t have enough money to buy food, many of them look through garbage cans for food that people or restaurants have thrown away.
When the day is over, and you go back to your home, big or small, remember that many other people in your town will spend the night in the street. Will it be cold where you live tonight?
