Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

Another critical factor that plays a part in susceptibility to cold is age. A study done by the University of Michigan School of public health revealed particulars that seem to hold true for the general population. Infants are the most cold-ridden group, averaging more than six colds in their first year. Boys have more colds than girls up to age three. After the age of three, girls are more susceptible than boys, and teenage girls average three colds a year to boys’ two.

The general incidence of colds continues to decline into maturity. Elderly people who are in good health have as few as one or two colds annually. One exception is found among people in their twenties, especially women, who show a rise in cold infections because people in this age group are most likely to have young children. Adults who delay having children until the thirties and forties experience the same sudden increase in cold infections.

The study also found that economics plays an important role. As income increases, the frequency at which colds are reported in the family decreases. Families with the lowest income suffer about a third more cold than families at the lower end. Lower-income generally forces people to live in more cramped quarters than those typically occupied by wealthier people, and crowding increases the opportunities for the cold virus to travel from person to person. Low income may also adversely influence diet. The degree to which poor nutrition affects susceptibility to colds is not yet clearly established, but an inadequate diet is suspected of lowering resistance generally.

The paragraph that precedes this passage most probably deals with ________.

  • minor diseases other than colds
  • the recommended treatment of colds
  • a factor that affects susceptibility to colds
  • methods of preventing colds among elderly people

What does the author claim about the study discussed in the passage?

  • It contains many inconsistences.
  • It specializes in children.
  • It contradicts the results of earlier studies in the field.
  • Its results apparently are relevant for the population as a whole.

It may be inferred from the passage that which of the following age groups of people is most likely to catch colds?

  • Infant boys
  • Young girls
  • Teenage boys
  • Elderly women

There is information in the second paragraph of the passage to support which of the following conclusions?

  • Men are more susceptible to colds than women.
  • Children infect their parents with colds.
  • People who live in a cold climate have more colds than those who live in a warm one.
  • People who don’t have children are more susceptible to colds than those who do.

The author’s main purpose in writing the last paragraph of the passage is to ______.

  • explain how cold viruses are transmitted
  • prove that a poor diet causes colds
  • discuss the relationship between income and frequency of colds
  • discuss the distribution of income among the people in the study

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions:

In the United States today there are more than half a million criminals serving time in jails or prisons. Most prisoners are male high school dropouts between the ages of 18 and 29. Even more shocking is the fact that the number and rate of imprisonment have more than doubled over the past twenty years, and the recidivism — that is, the rate re-arrest — is more than 60 percent.

Although the stated objective of the criminal justice system, on both federal and state levels, is to rehabilitate the inmates and reintegrate them into society, the system itself does not support such a goal. Although most jails are located within the community, prisons are usually geographically or psychologically isolated and terribly overcrowded. Even in the more enlightened prisons, only one-third of the inmates have vocational training opportunities or work release options. Even fewer have access to qualified counselors, psychologists, or social workers.

If prisons are indeed to achieve the goal of rehabilitating offenders, then the prisons themselves will have to change. First, they will have to be smaller, housing no more than five hundred prisoners. It has been shown that crowding in large facilities is not conducive to behavior modification. Second, they have to be built in or near population centers, with community resources available for gradual reintegration into society. This must include social and psychological services. Finally, prison programs must be restructured to provide work release and vocational and academic training for inmates to prepare them with skills that carry over into their lives after release. In addition to parole terms and community supervised work release, successful models for such collaborative efforts between the criminal justice system and the community already exist in several hundred half-way houses throughout the country where inmates complete their sentences while beginning to re-establish their lives as productive members of society. Studies suggest that imprisonment, as it is currently administered, must be viewed as a punishment rather than reform. Until we approach the problem in terms of changing behaviors rather than segregating offenders, prisoners who are released will probably return to a life of crime.

What is the author's main point?

  • Prisons must be restructured if they are to accomplish the goal of rehabilitation
  • Goals for community collaboration have been successful
  • Most of the criminals serving time in prison do not have goals
  • The criminal justice system must establish a better goal

According to the author, how many prisoners are offered training or work release?

  • None
  • 33 1/3 percent
  • 50 percent
  • 60 percent

The word “recidivism” in paragraph 1 refers to_______.

  • all people who are imprisoned
  • people who return to prison after release
  • people who dropout of high school
  • people who have been in prison for a long time

The word “options” in the passage is closest in meaning to______.

  • exceptions
  • challenges
  • alternatives
  • benefits

What does the author mean by the statement “Although the stated objective of the criminal justice system, on both federal and state levels, is to rehabilitate the inmates and reintegrate them into society, the system itself does not support such a goal”?

  • Inmates in prisons do not participate in in rehabilitation programs before they are
  • The goal of rehabilitation and reintegration into society is encouraged by the prison
  • Prison systems do not promote rehabilitation and reintegration despite their goal
  • Rehabilitation cannot be achieved by prisons without reintegration into society

Why should prisons be built near towns or cities?

  • Prisoners benefit from family visitations
  • Workers need to be close to their homes
  • Reintegration programs require resources
  • Prisons contribute to the economics

The author mentions all the following as necessary to prison reform EXCEPT ____________.

  • newer buildings
  • smaller institutions
  • vocational training
  • collaboration with the community

The paragraph following the passage most probably discusses ____________.

  • the goal for most state and federal prisons
  • the cost of prison reform
  • examples of models for community collaboration
  • problems with the current criminal justice system
