Read the following passage and mark the correct word or phrase that best fits each of the blanks.

The importance of fairy tales for children

Fairy tales are the stories that adults, especially parents, tell young children. In view of their name, it is surprising that hardly any of them are actually about fairies. most fairy tales have happy endings, the stories usually deal with very situations — children abandoned in the forest, terrifying giants, cruel stepmothers. However, despite being scared when they are told the stories, children will often ask to hear them over and over again.

Many psychologists believe that what fairy tales do, in addition to children’s imagination, is to show that there are problems in the world and that they can be overcome. Just like adults, children have fears and worries; theirs are of things such as abandonment, loss, injuries, witches. Fairy tales present real problems in a fantasy form children are able to understand. This, it is claimed, allows them to their fears and to realise, if ever in their unconscious mind, that no matter how difficult the circumstances, there are always ways of coping.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the following questions.

In today's competitive world, what responsible parents would not want to give their children but the best possible start in life? For this reason, many parents want their children, often as young as ten months old, to become familiar with computers. They seem to think that if their children grow up with computers, they will be better equipped to face the challenges of the future.

No one has proved that computers make children more creative or more intelligent. The truth may even be the opposite. Educational psychologists claim that too much exposure to computers, especially for the very young, may negatively affect normal brain development. Children gain valuable experience in the world from their interaction with physical objects. Ten-month-old babies may benefit more from bumping their heads or putting various objects in their mouths than they will from staring at eye-catching cartoons. A four-year-old child can improve hand-eye coordination and understand cause and effect better by experimenting with a crayon than by moving a cursor around a computer screen. So, as educational psychologists suggest, instead of government funding going to more and more computer classes, it might be better to devote resources to music and art programs.

It is ludicrous to think that children will fall behind if they are not exposed to computers from an early age. Time is too precious to spend with a "mouse". Now is the time when they should be out there learning to ride a bike. There will be time later on for them to start banging away at keyboards.

Children who spend a lot of time on their computers ________.

  • will suffer from brain damage
  • do not necessarily make more progress than those who don't
  • tend to have more accidents than those who don't
  • tend to like music and art more than those who don't

What would be an appropriate title for this passage?

  • Never too early to start
  • Computers in schools
  • Let kids be kids

  • mouths
  • babies

  • Parents should not put off buying a computer for their children.
  • There is no evidence that children who use computers are cleverer than those who do not.
  • Computers seriously harm children's eyesight.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the following questions.

Until recently, most American entrepreneurs were men. Discrimination against women in business, the demands of caring for families, and lack of business training had kept the number of women entrepreneurs small. Now, however, businesses owned by women account for more than $40 billion in annual revenues, and this figure is likely to continue rising throughout the 1990s. As Carolyn Doppelt Gray, an official of the Small Business Administration, has noted, "The 1970s was the decade of women entering management, and the 1980s turned out to be the decade of the women entrepreneurs".

What are some of the factors behind this trend? For one thing, as more women earn advanced degrees in business and enter the corporate world, they are finding obstacles. Women are still excluded from most executive suites. Charlotte Taylor, a management consultant, had noted, "In the 1970s, women believed if they got an MBA and worked hard, they could become chairman of the board. Now they've found out that isn't going to happen, so they go out on their own".

In the past, most women entrepreneurs worked in "women's" fields: cosmetics and clothing, for example. But this is changing. Consider ASK Computer Systems, a $22-million-year computer software business. It was founded in 1973 by Sandra Kurtzig, who was then a housewife with degrees in math and engineering. When Kurtzig founded the business, her first product was software that let weekly newspapers keep tabs on their newspaper carriers and her office was a bedroom at home, with a shoebox under the bed to hold the company's cash. After she succeeded with the newspaper software system, she hired several bright computer-science graduates to develop additional programs. When these were marketed and sold, ASK began to grow. It now has 200 employees, and Sandra Kurtzig owns $66.9 million of stock.

Of course, many women who start their own businesses fail, just as men often do. They still face hurdles in the business world, especially problems in raising money; the banking and finance world is still dominated by men, and old attitudes die hard. Most businesses owned by women are still quite small. But the situation is changing; there are likely to be many more Sandra Kurtzig in the years ahead.

What is the main idea of this passage?

  • Women today are better educated than in the past, making them more attractive to the business world.
  • The computer is especially lucrative for women today.
  • Women are better at small businesses than men are.
  • Women today are opening more businesses of their own.

All of the following were mentioned in the passage as detriments to women in the business world EXCEPT ______.

  • Women were required to stay at home with their families.
  • Women lacked ability to work in business.
  • Women faced discrimination in business.
  • Women were not trained in business.

In paragraph 2, the word “that” refers to ______.

  • women becoming the chairman of the board
  • women working hard
  • women achieving advanced degrees
  • women believing that business is a place for them

According to the passage, Charlotte Taylor believes that women in the 1970s ______.

  • were unrealistic about their opportunities in business management
  • were still more interested in education than business opportunities
  • had fewer obstacles in business than they do today
  • were unable to work hard enough to success in business
