MY ORGANIC GARDEN
by Larry Davidson, age 13

Last year, my family and I started a small fruit and vegetable garden. We wanted to help the planet, so we decided to grow our food in a natural way. This means we do not use chemicals. Instead, we use old fruits and vegetables as food for the soil. Most people throw these things away, but we use them to help our plants grow. Now, we don’t need to buy as much fruit and vegetables from the store.

Having a garden is healthier because the food we grow is safe for us and for animals. It was hard work at first and we were worried that we might not have enough time. Therefore, we decided to take turns. Each of us cared for the garden on a different day.

We used a large wooden box for the garden. First, we made small holes in the bottom for water to drain out. Then, we added stones and soil. We planted small plants and watered them every day. On one side, we grew tomatoes, onions, carrots, and potatoes. On the other side, we planted melons and strawberries. After a month, we picked our first fruits and vegetables. We were so happy to eat them at dinner! It was a fun and special experience.

Why did Larry and his family build a garden on their own?

  • They bought a lot of gardening tools to do different tasks.
  • They used robots to support them on watering the plants.
  • They hired some professional gardeners to help them.
  • Each of them looked after the garden on a specific day.

  • Cabbages
  • Carrots
  • Strawberries
