For centuries, people tried using wings made of wood or cardboard, but they always failed. Everything changed when the Wright brothers created the first airplane about a century ago. At first, these planes were tiny, with room for only one pilot, and couldn't travel very far. Now, enormous aircraft carry hundreds of passengers worldwide, and smaller planes are crucial  emergencies in remote areas. Over the past fifty years, more people have used airplanes to go on holidays or visit distant places. Fifty years ago, most countries had just one airport, but today nearly every major city at least one to meet the rising demand for air travel. This rapid development has made flying an everyday part of modern life.
